On November 2, the union and the district announced that they had reached an interim agreement, but they did not release details and the two sides agreed not to comment to the media on the agreement until it was voted on. At its meeting on Thursday, the school board voted on the contract, in which the 576 members of the West Shore Education Association also reviewed the agreement before Monday`s vote. The association represents teachers, counsellors, domestic and school visitors, librarians and psychologists. The union`s bargaining team said it would go to the school committee to develop new bargaining dates to avoid a strike. “While the negotiation process has been lengthy, we appreciate the willingness of the district negotiating team to work with us last month to reach a contract before the end of the year,” Downs said in the press release. Later, in an interview, he added, “I wouldn`t say anyone is jumping forward, but we were able to meet on this, so we found a place where both are happy with the results.” According to a press release from the West Shore Education Association, the new collective agreement provides for general salary increases for the following school years: West Shore district teachers rejected the district`s latest contract proposal and allowed their union`s bargaining team to call a Friday night strike if necessary. The strike authorization means that the bargaining team can call a strike at any time as long as there is 48 hours` notice to the district, the association said in a written statement.
